Qualified in 1973 and was a partner in a large Newcastle firm before joining the Attorney Generals Chambers in Hong Kong where he was involved at a time of turbulent change in some of the most high profile cases of the then Crown Colony’s recent history. He returned to the North East in 1978 and set up his own firm in North Shields. Following the recruitment of Duncan Campbell the firm became known as Hindle Campbell. It has grown over the years and Clive has been involved in a number of high profile cases in various areas of law. He has, at the same time, built up an expertise in commercial cases and in complex areas of law including judicial review of administrative decisions.
Clive is head of the Commercial Department of Hindle Campbell which covers litigation of various types but also deals with corporate matters including share/asset sales and purchases.
Clive is happy to take on cases no matter how big the opponent. He has been responsible for some significant successes in litigation including the successful conclusion simultaneously of in excess of 100 cases against one of the world’s largest oil companies.
Duncan Campbell
Head of the Criminal Department, Duncan qualified in 1982 and joined the firm in 1983. In 1984 he was appointed as a partner to form Hindle Campbell. Duncan has been involved in a variety of legal disciplines such as personal injury and medical negligence however since 1999 he has mainly specialised in criminal law. He now heads a highly respected and busy Criminal Department which provides advice and representation on all aspects of criminal law including police station attendances, road traffic offences, CICA claims, fraud and money laundering. Duncan specialises in advocacy. He is responsible for maintaining our Legal Aid contract for providing advice and assistance in criminal matters in addition to acting on a privately funded basis for matters outside the scope of Legal Aid. Duncan supervises the operation of the emergency phone system, which ensures 24 hour advice and assistance at police stations around the region.
Eileen Wilson
Head of the Commercial Property Department Eileen joined Hindle Campbell in 1987 after working in international corporate personnel for a major manufacturing company in London. On returning to the North East she worked in the music industry. On qualifying in 1994 she was appointed as a partner. Eileen has considerable experience in both residential and commercial property but now runs the Commercial Property Department acting for a wide variety of clients including those acquiring their first shop or office to multi-million pound development companies. Eileen believes in maintaining long term client relationships and her clients include a number of well known large local businesses together with a sprinkling of start ups.
Clare Usher
Head of the Family Department Clare qualified in 1997 and joined Hindle Campbell in 2000. In the ensuing ten years she has developed a highly specialised department with extensive experience of child care law, including acting for parents in care proceedings, contact and residence issues. She is currently in the process of being appointed to the Children Panel and is a member of the Family Panel and Resolution. Clare generally conducts her own court advocacy.
Her department holds a Legal Aid contract for conducting public funded family work, which Clare supervises to ensure that all clients have an equal opportunity to obtain appropriate legal representation.
Clare also acts in high net value cases advising on, amongst general matrimonial issues, business shares and pension rights.

Gary Ackinclose
Gary qualified as a solicitor in 2001 after initially training as a legal executive. He joined Hindle Campbell in 2006 to head our Civil Litigation Department and in 2008 he was appointed a partner. Gary brought with him extensive experience in many aspects of litigation including employment tribunals (both for employer and employee), personal injury claims, insurance disputes, high value contract disputes and debt recovery.
He is a very experienced lecturer and generally conducts his own advocacy. He has for a number of years lectured at a local college to legal executive trainees and gives annual seminars both in London and Manchester on various topics of law.
Currently Gary is instrumental in developing our Claims Department which is a specifically designated law team handling consumer claims for insurance mis-selling by banks and lenders. This is a highly technical and complex area of consumer credit law.

Nicola Carroll
Head of Residential Conveyancing, Nicola has specialised in residential conveyancing since qualifying in 2002. Prior to joining Hindle Campbell in 2006, Nicola worked for two local Legal 500 firms where she obtained vast experience in running high volume residential conveyancing teams of paralegals and was responsible for their training and supervision.
We were very pleased to recruit Nicola in 2006 and she became a partner in 2008. She is a highly skilled conveyancer who has developed a highly efficient but approachable and friendly team who understand the stress that property transactions can cause and endeavours to minimise it.
Phil Gow
Phil qualified in 2003 and joined Hindle Campbell in 2008 to assist Clare Usher in our rapidly expanding Family Department. Phil has considerable experience in dealing with cases of domestic violence and abuse and frequently attends court to obtain emergency injunctions. He also acts on all other aspects of family law and is a member of the Family Panel and Resolution.
Kevin Johnson
Kevin qualified as a solicitor in 2004 and joined Hindle Campbell in 2008 as head of our Probate, Wills and Trusts Department. Kevin brought with him considerable specialist experience which he continually puts to good use and has an excellent reputation for giving clear and accurate advice and assistance to clients, dealing professionally but with sensitivity at what is always a very traumatic time. Kevin also has the ability to explain in plain English how, by making provision during your lifetime, it is possible to minimise future concerns about the people and things that matter most.
Matthew Purves
Matthew joined Hindle Campbell as a trainee in 2007 following the merger with Purves Hindson. He qualified in 2008 and is a highly specialised criminal lawyer. Matthew has acted for a large number of defendants in various high profile serious crime cases including drug importation, fraud conspiracies, sexual offences, murder and kidnapping.
Matthew is also an accredited Police Station Representative as approved by the Legal Services Commission. He also has experience in Prison law and providing representation at parole board hearings and appeals.
Matthews father John Purves continues to be employed by our criminal department as a consultant, providing us with the benefit of his extensive Crimial law expertise.
KarenHallett
Karen is a native Australian who joined Hindle Campbell in 2004 after a period of employment in a Legal 500 high profile Newcastle firm. She brought with her considerable legal experience particularly in land law and conveyancing. Hindle Campbell sponsored her legal study at Northumbria University where in 2008 she graduated with a first class LLB Honours Exempting degree.
Since graduating Karen has qualified as a solicitor and is a highly valued member of our corporate team.
Robert Crompton
Robert joined Hindle Campbell in 2009 from a high profile Newcastle 500 firm where he gained experience in handling high volume claims work. At Hindle Campbell Robert specialises in our rapidly expanding insurance mis-selling department. This is a new and exciting area of law which Robert is more than happy to explain in plain language to our clients and assist by submitting claims against the main high street lenders and obtaining refunds due to them.
Robert is a graduate member of the Institute of Legal Executives.
Gordon Sursham
Gordon is a very experienced Conveyancer. He joined Hindle Campbell in 2000 and specialised in the investor buy to let market. Due to a down turn in the housing market in 2009 Gordon re-trained and is now a highly competent claims handler in our PPI department where he is fully utilising his skills in handling high volume work with calm expertise.
Vicki Grist
In 2008 Vicki joined Hindle Campbell as a trainee lawyer, having graduated from university of Wales with an honours degree. Prior to studying law Vicki had been employed in the insurance industry where she gained considerable commercial experience, which is currently being utilised by our Corporate and Family Departments.
